Volunteer with us

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with PAW Alliance (Piedmont Animal Welfare Alliance). We’re an all-volunteer nonprofit working at the intersection of animal welfare and social justice. We need volunteers to help us help others. Be part of our Village!

We have a variety of opportunities, and your gifts, talents and skills can really help us with our work.

We are the Animal Welfare partner of the minimum-security prison, Forsyth Correctional Center, in the New Leash on Life program. Dogs in need of training are paired with qualifying inmate-trainers for a 10-week session, supervised by professional trainers from the Winston-Salem Dog Training Club.

Our New Start in Life program assists Family Services, Forsyth, at their domestic violence shelter by caring for pets while the survivor is at the shelter. We pay for everything, including all medical care.

Right now, we don’t need frequent volunteers at the prison, but we are in serious need of volunteers “on the outside” to help us make New Leash on Life successful. And we really need foster homes for New Start in Life pets. If you’re interested in being a foster, please fill out our Foster form. Some short-term volunteer jobs such as putting up flyers etc., would be excellent for Service Hours for teens!

As your first step to working with PAW Alliance, please fill out the Volunteer Application, checking all areas of interest, and we will get back to you shortly. When you send your info, we will assess your interest with our needs, and get back in touch with you. After that, we’ll send you the PAW Alliance Volunteer Agreement, and arrange to meet with you. We hope that you will become a PAW Alliance Partner! Thank you!

Ways to Help

  • ADOPTION FAIRS: We can always use help at some of our adoption fairs. We have at least two per session at local venues when the inmate-trainers and prison staff are with us.

  • ERRANDS: Goodness knows, we’ll have lots of them. Food and treat runs, meds pickup at vets’ offices, and especially posting flyers around the area about our dogs for adoption and our two programs.

  • EVENTS: Help plan, run, and work special events and fundraisers that will support our important work. Events are fun and help us get the word out AND raise funds.

  • FOSTER DOGS: If a dog isn’t adopted after the 10-wk session, we need qualified foster homes (short-term) as we actively work toward finding a forever home. We also really need fosters for our New Start in Life Domestic Violence program. Please fill out a Foster Application!

  • GRADUATION: Help us with food, logistics, and other tasks at our graduations (sometimes at a dog training club, sometimes at the prison) after each 10-week session.

  • PHOTOGRAPHY: If you have a knack for photos and a decent camera, we really need your help!

  • PROMOTION: 1. Social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.); 2. Creation and distribution of flyers and posters advertising our dogs for adoption;

  • PUBLIC SPEAKING: Join our list of people who would like to spread the word about our work to small groups, such as churches, retirement homes, and civic clubs. We have all the info you’d need to provide.

  • SOCIALIZING ANIMALS: Join us in a public setting to walk the dogs outside the prison campus and help them become accustomed to different situations and people.

  • VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT: We really need help in creating a robust volunteer list and coordinating volunteers! If you know a friend who’d be a good volunteer or a foster, please pass the word!

  • WORK FROM HOME: Help manage an email list and / or data base of potential adopters, donors, and volunteers.
